Nine-Hole Golf Continues to Gain Momentum in Australia

New data released through the Golf Australia Insights Hub highlights the growing popularity of nine-hole golf, reflecting changing player preferences and the increasing demand for more flexible ways to enjoy the game.

Analysing more than 20 million handicap-submitted rounds over the past four years, the report found that more than 734,000 nine-hole rounds were recorded in the 12 months to May 2026, representing an 11.4% increase year-on-year.

The findings suggest that shorter formats are becoming an increasingly important part of the golfing landscape, allowing players to fit the game around work, family commitments and busy lifestyles while still enjoying its physical, mental and social benefits.

The report also found particularly strong participation among women and younger golfers, while highlighting the role nine-hole golf can play as an accessible entry point for those new to the sport.

For clubs and industry stakeholders, the trend reflects an opportunity to engage golfers through a broader range of playing formats and experiences, helping to support participation and long-term growth.

As golf continues to evolve, the rise of nine-hole play demonstrates that flexibility and accessibility remain key drivers in attracting and retaining players.

CiMSO welcomes initiatives that encourage greater participation in golf and support the continued growth of the game across all ages and skill levels.
