A Taste to Take Home
A guest discovers a favourite coffee at breakfast, enjoys a locally made preserve or asks about the spice blend used at dinner. Giving them a way to take that flavour home can extend the memory of their stay and create an additional retail opportunity.
Booking.com’s travel predictions for 2026 highlight interest in edible souvenirs and distinctive kitchenware. Its global research found that 68% of travellers would consider buying design-led kitchenware or pantry products while on holiday. For hotels and lodges, this offers a useful starting point for a small, carefully chosen product range.
Begin with something guests already enjoy
The strongest starting point may already be on the menu. Consider products guests ask about, items staff can confidently recommend and goods that reflect the surrounding area.
Depending on the destination, that might mean locally roasted coffee, tea, preserves, packaged spices or handmade ceramics. A property in Namibia will have a different story to tell from a resort in northern Thailand. Choose products that belong to that particular place.
A small selection makes it easier to assess demand, manage stock and explain the products well.
Let the producer share the story
Work with suppliers on an accurate description of who makes each product, where it comes from and how it is used. With their permission, a short producer profile can help guests understand the connection between the item and the destination.
Agree on pricing, supply quantities, packaging and lead times before placing orders. Small producers may need advance notice, especially when a property expects a busy period or wants to offer welcome gifts.
Make it practical to take home
A souvenir should be manageable to pack. Sturdy packaging, suitable portion sizes and clear product information can make the purchase easier.
Food products also need appropriate storage, ingredient and allergen information, and attention to shelf life. International guests may face destination-specific restrictions on food, liquids or plant products. Encourage them to check the requirements for their journey; sealed packaging alone does not guarantee an item can cross a border.
Connect the experience to the sale
Guests need to know where a product is available. A discreet menu note, a display near reception or a recommendation after dinner can provide that connection without interrupting the stay.
A tasting or cooking activity could also introduce the range. Where suitable, guests might pre-order a small gift selection to collect at checkout.
Keep control as the range grows
Retail creates operational responsibilities. Track purchase costs, sales, breakages, expiry dates and stock movement. If the same item is used in the kitchen, sold in the shop and included in gift packs, record those uses clearly so the property can assess the return.
Connected sales and stock information can help teams identify popular items and replenish them sensibly.
A thoughtful retail offering gives guests something meaningful to remember and introduces them to local producers. Begin with a product people already love, then build the range around real demand.
