Claire Dowling Makes R&A History

CiMSO congratulates Claire Dowling on her appointment as Captain of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews for 2026/27, becoming the first woman to hold the position in the Club’s history.

A distinguished amateur golfer and respected administrator, Dowling has dedicated decades to the game both on and off the course. Her playing career included representing Ireland, Great Britain and Ireland, and winning multiple national and international amateur championships.

Beyond competition, Dowling has made a significant contribution to golf governance, serving in leadership and advisory roles across organisations including England Golf, CONGU, and The R&A. She was among the first women elected to membership of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club in 2015 and has since served on several key committees, including the Rules Committee and General Committee.

Her appointment marks a notable moment in the history of one of golf’s most influential institutions and reflects the continued evolution of leadership within the game.
